Robert Stirling is a partner in the firm's financial institutions group based in London and heads up the London non‑contentious insurance practice. He has a practice which focuses on corporate transactional work with particular reference to the financial institutions sector: specifically insurance and asset management, as well as advising on the regulatory issues involved both in respect of transactional work and the sector generally. Recent experience includes advising:
- Pearl Group on the acquisition of Resolution plc and on‑sale of certain assets to Royal London;
- Credit Suisse on the disposal of parts of its asset management business to Aberdeen;
- HHG on the disposal of its life insurance businesses to Pearl Group;
- Kontrakt Sofia on the sale of 70 per cent. of DZI Insurance, the former state insurer of Bulgaria, to KBC, the listed Belgium bancassurer, for €185m;
- Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company on the sale of Gartmore Investment Management plc (GIM), the UK-based fund manager of Gartmore Group, to Oxford Acquisition III Limited, a company formed at the direction of Hellman & Friedman, LLC, and members of Gartmore's senior fund management and executive team;
- Eureko BV on the acquisition of F&C Asset Management and the subsequent disposal of F&C to ISIS Asset Management;
- Pender Mutual Insurance Company from formation to its successful schemes of arrangement;
- BNP Paribas on the acquisition of Royal Bank of Scotland’s international securities business; and
- Advent International on its acquisition of Domestic & General.
Robert studied law at Cambridge, joined the firm in 1990 and qualified in 1992. He became a partner in May 2000.
