Freshfields appoints Nick Squire as new global head of employment, pensions and benefits

International law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has elected London-based partner Nick Squire as the new global practice group leader (PGL) for the firm’s employment, pensions and benefits (EPB) practice. Nick, who will assume the role from 1 November 2010, succeeds Hamburg-based partner Dr. Klaus-Stefan Hohenstatt as he completes a second term in the role.

Following a separate election, Klaus-Stefan has been elected as regional managing partner for Germany, Austria and Central Eastern Europe with effect from 1 September 2010, succeeding Düsseldorf-based partner Manfred Finken.

As PGL, Nick will continue to develop EPB’s single-team approach, combining employment, pensions and benefits specialists in one integrated practice to offer clients seamless HR legal support across jurisdictions.

Commenting on the election, chief executive Ted Burke said: ‘Nick’s solutions-driven approach, significant experience of developing global client relationships, combined with his first-class technical legal skills, make him an outstanding candidate for this role. Under Klaus-Stefan’s stewardship, the EPB practice has maintained a leading reputation in the market and we are confident that Nick will continue to drive the practice forward.’

Nick said: ‘As the global economy shifts into recovery mode, we are continuing to respond with agility and energy to clients’ rapidly changing needs. Our lawyers’ depth of knowledge and experience, combined with the practice’s integrated approach, means we are ideally positioned to help international businesses anticipate and navigate the complex HR challenges posed by today’s legal and economic landscape.’
